Literacy Tips & activities
From ABC Literacy Canada.
- Engage in Sing-along sessions with your children. Singing helps develop a greater awareness of rythm, rhyme, words & sounds.
- Follow a recipe together - It's a fun way to practice reading, math and comprehension.
- Just reading to your child 20 minutes a day adds up to more than 1,450 hours of learning from infancy to the end of Grade 6.
- Let children count out change when making a purchase. Reinforce the importance of math everyday.
- Question your child about the story you're reading together (What do you think happens next?) to make sure they understand and to stimulate thoughts.
- Many children can read words by sounding them out, but do not comprehend the meanings of the words they are reading. Discuss what words mean with your child and help them develop their vocabulary.
- Visit your public library every week.
- Write letters, short stories, and songs together.
- Make reading fun. Create delight by writing funny stories, making silly voices and creating new counting games with your children. Laugh!
